Over 51 million Egyptians are eligible to vote in the upcoming constitutional referendum, official MENA news agency reported Wednesday, quoting an official of the Administrative Development Ministry.

Tarek Saad, engineer and database manager at the ministry, said that there are over 51 million eligible voters for the upcoming referendum.

Egypt has a population of 91 million, including 83 million at home and 8 million abroad, according to a recent report released by Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.

The constitutional referendum, scheduled to kick off Saturday, has caused nonstop protests and disputes nationwide between supporters, mostly Islamists, and opponents including liberals, leftists and Copts.

Egyptians expatriates have already started Wednesday morning to cast their votes in the referendum, and their poll will end Saturday.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi issued Wednesday a republican decree on running the constitution referendum in two stages. The first one will be on Dec. 15, covering the governorates of Cairo, Alexandria, Daqahlya, Gharbeya, Sharqeya, Assiut, Souhag, Aswan, Southern Sinai and Northern Sinai, while the second stage will be on Dec. 22, covering the other governorates.
