A real estate salesperson found to be unregistered was charged in court and fined 21,000 Singapore dollars (17,213 U.S. dollars) in Singapore, local media reported on Thursday.

Lum Chap Heng, 59, was charged in court earlier under the Estate Agents Act for posting fliers carrying his mobile numbers to advertise for landlords and tenants, Channel NewsAsia said.

The Council for Estate Agencies also said that Lum represented a flat owner and helped her find potential tenants for her property. He also led clients on visits to flats.

The council said Lum was aware that it was illegal for him to hold himself out as a salesperson as he was not registered under the Estate Agents Act. He allegedly told prospective tenants that he had registered with the council in 2010 and identified himself as a licensed agent, too.

The council advises consumers not to respond to any real estate agent's flier, leaflet or advertisement that did not provide the salesperson's name, registration number, contact number, as well as the estate agent's name and license number. Endi
