The unofficial results of the first stage of Egypt's constitution referendum show that 56.5 percent of voters said "yes" for the constitution, state-run al-Ahram online reported Sunday.

Noting that all the results are from presiding judges in governorates except Cairo, al-Ahram online reported that 4,595,311 voters accepted the constitution, while 3,536,838 refused it.

Egyptians on Saturday morning went to polling booths to vote in the first stage of the referendum on a draft constitution. The first round of the referendum covered the governorates of Cairo, Alexandria, Daqahlya, Gharbeya, Sharqeya, Assiut, Souhag, Aswan, Southern and Northern Sinai, while the second phase will be held a week later in the rest of the country.

The final official result is to be announced after the second round due on Dec. 22. Endi
