Syria continues to fire Scud missiles: NATO chief

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen confirmed on Friday that the Syrian government forces were continuing to launch Scud missiles within the last few days.

"I can confirm that we have detected the launch of Scud-type missiles. We strongly regret that. I consider it act of a desperate regime approaching collapse," Rasmussen told reporters at NATO headquarters.

The NATO chief said that the recent launch of Scud missiles highlighted the need for effective defense and protection of NATO member state Turkey.

"Let me stress that the recent launch of missiles has not hit Turkey's territory, but of course there is a potential threat," he said.

"This is exactly the reason why NATO allies decided to deploy Patriot missiles in Turkey for a defensive purpose only, but with the aim to ensure effective defense and protection of Turkey's population and territory."

Last week, NATO and U.S. official said the Syrian government fired around six Scud missiles at rebel fighters as they make territorial gains. The move was seen as an escalation of the conflict in Syria.
