The police in Nigeria's southern Delta State killed no fewer than 91 kidnap and robbery suspects between January 2012 and Jan. 5 this year, an official has said.

Ikechukwu Aduba, the Commissioner of Police in the state, told reporters in Asaba, the state capital, on Monday that the force was ready to combat crime even though the area was known as the flash point for criminals in the country.

He warned the criminals to turn a new leaf because there would be no hiding place for them in the new year.

Aduba said the command arrested 473 suspected robbers and kidnappers, killed 91 in action, injured six and recovered 212 arms and 8,158 rounds of ammunition.

"We also rescued 82 kidnap victims and recovered 76 vehicles and 19 motorcycles in the year under review," Aduba said.

He called for more support from the general public, traditional rulers and parents, saying the police would need information to serve the people and urged them to report persons of questionable character.

He recalled that the success recorded by the command in the past year was due to intelligence gathering.

"Just last Friday, the police gunned down three armed kidnappers during a gun battle and arrested three kidnap suspects in Abraka. The incident was the kidnap of one Martins Denedo, the Delta State University accountant," Aduba said.

The commissioner assured investors and the entire people of the state of their safety in the new year. Endit
