Hundreds of people Tuesday took to the streets of the western Indian state of Goa to protest against the rape of a seven-year-old girl in a school toilet Monday.

The girl was allegedly raped by an unidentified person in the toilet of her school, next to the principal's room, in the port town of Vasco during recess Monday, according to the police who have detained the principal on charges of negligence and also launched a massive manhunt to track down the accused.

"We will not spare the accused and anyone involved in this crime," Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said as protests continued throughout the day.

There has been massive public outrage over sexual assaults on women in India recently, particularly after a 23-year-old medical student was gangraped by six men on a moving bus in the Indian capital on Dec. 16 last year.

The girl later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital in Singapore. All the six accused are currently on trial facing rape and murder charges, which carry a maximum punishment of death penalty. Endi
