The South African government said on Tuesday that it will launch a campaign to promote BRICS among ordinary South Africans.

The campaign will start in Limpopo province on Wednesday with road shows ahead of the next BRICS summit scheduled for March 26- 27 in Durban, said Harold Maloka, spokesperson for Minister in The Presidency for Performance Monitoring, Evaluation and Administration, Collins Chabane.

"The purpose of the road show is to raise awareness and galvanize the support of the country for the summit," Maloka said.

BRICS are the emerging powers which include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

"The road shows will provide a platform to inform the country about the importance of South Africa's membership of the BRICS bloc and its benefits including how it benefits South African national priorities," said Maloka.

He said the BRICS awareness campaign is an effort by the government to take BRICS to the people so that they can gain knowledge on the importance of BRICS membership to the South Africans.

Chabane, Minister in The Presidency for Performance Monitoring, Evaluation and Administration, will lead the BRICS road shows.

The road shows will be held in all provinces in the leadup to the summit. There have been suggestions to incorporate BRICS into the school curricular in South Africa. Endi
