A French tanker owned by SEA Tankers company and flying the Luxembourg flag, which was hijacked by pirates on Sunday in Abidjan waters with 17 crew members on board, "has been released," the company said in a statement.

The ship was released early on Wednesday morning, according to the statement, adding two of the 17 crew members on board were slightly injured.

The incident was among the latest reported in the past week, during which at least three other attacks hit the headlines.

Piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea, running from Guinea on Africa's northwestern tip to Angola in the south, have been increasing in recent years, with Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer, recording 293 cases of sea robbery and pirate attacks between 2003 and 2008. Endi
