South Korea's STX Offshore & Shipbuilding, the world's fourth-largest shipbuilder, said Thursday that it has won orders from Colombia Navy to build 2 patrol ships worth 34 billion won (31 million U.S. dollars).

"It was not a big deal, but the order has a significant meaning as it is the first export of warship for us. STX O&S was designated as the defense firm in 2006," said an official at the company.

Under the deal, the shipbuilder will deliver the 250-ton vessels with a cruising speed of 23 knots by the end of 2014. The deal has an option to offer ship engines and parts worth around 140 billion won.

The order came as part of strategy to modernize Colombia Navy, the shipbuilder said, forecasting that it would receive additional orders as the Latin American country plans to make massive orders of 1,500-ton offshore patrol vessels.

Shares in STX O&S closed at 6,530 won, up 0.8 percent from Wednesday's close. Enditem
