The official countdown to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi began on St. Petersburg's iconic Nevsky Prospect on Thursday.
With one year left to go until the Opening Ceremony in Sochi, St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko presided over the official countdown ceremony along with other local luminaries.
The Winter Olympics are being viewed as a chance not just for Sochi but for Russia as a whole to put itself on the map as a tourist destination.
