Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, Feb. 18

The benchmark index of the Indian equities market closed higher on Monday with the 30-scrip sensitive index of the Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, closing at 19,501.08 points, 32.93 points or 0.17 percent higher from the previous close of 19,468.15 points.

The Sensex had a turnover of 2.76 billion rupees (about 51.06 million U.S. dollars).

SHANGHAI -- China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange closed at 2,421.56 points on Monday, down 10.84 points, or 0.45 percent.

Total turnover was 103.7 billion yuan (16.5 billion U.S. dollars).

SHENZHEN -- The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 9,795.91 points on Monday, down 193.19 points, or 1.93 percent.

Total turnover was 97.3 billion yuan (15.5 billion U.S. dollars) .

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Monday with composite index unchanged at 1433.43.

A total of 19,272 shares worth about 148 million Lao kip ( about 19,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

TOKYO -- The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average jumped 234.04 points, or 2.09 percent, from Friday to 11,407.87.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 20.28 points, or 2.15 percent, at 962. 69.

The turnover was about 1,840.4 billion yen (about 19.84 billion U.S. dollars).

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's share prices closed higher on Monday with the weighted index rising 36.88 points, or 0.46 percent, to close at 7,943.53, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

The local bourse fluctuated between 8,005.73 and 7,927.95 during the day's trading. Turnover totaled 95.52 billion new Taiwan dollars (3.22 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

SYDNEY -- Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX200 index lifted 29.5 points, or 0.59 percent, to close at 5,063.4 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index had added 28.3 points, or 0.56 percent, to 5,082.9 points.

Market turnover was 2.25 billion shares worth 9.38 billion AU dollars (9.66 billion U.S. dollars), with 519 stocks up, 527 down and 360 unchanged. (1 AU dollar equals 1.0295 U.S. dollars)

SEOUL -- South Korea's benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 0.73 point, or 0.04 percent, to close at 1,981. 91. Trading volume stood at 412.27 million shares worth 2.8 trillion won (2.59 billion U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index went up by 43.59 points to close at 6,565.23. The all-share index also rose by 18.51 points, or 0.45 percent, to 4,119.95.

Trading volume reached 2.4 billion shares worth 8.86 billion pesos (218.29 million U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Vietnam's national stock market index, VN-Index, closed at 493.95 points on Monday, down 0.08 points, or 0.02 percent, against the latest trading day's closing session on Feb. 8 before the traditional Lunar New Year holidays from Feb. 9-17.

A total of about 69.423 million shares worth 994.212 billion Vietnamese dong (VND) (47.68 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange. Prices of 181 stocks went up, 63 stocks fell down, while 50 stocks remained unchanged.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand's stock market closed 0.4 percent higher on Monday with the benchmark NZX-50 index rising 17.74 points to 4214.47 on a turnover of 97.7 million NZ dollars (82.41 million U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks went down on Monday, falling 62. 62 points or 0.27 percent to close at 23,381.94 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 23,477.49 points and 23,309.55 points during the day's session. Turnover totaled 51. 28 billion HK dollars (about 6.61 billion U.S. dollars), up from Friday's 46.67 billion HK dollars.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,620.93, down 7.00 points or 0.43 percent, and the Emas was at 11, 018.65, down 50.38 points or 0.46 percent.

Turnover declined to 765.09 million shares valued at 929.70 million ringgit Malaysia (299.85 million U.S. dollars), compared with 749.83 million shares valued at 1.19 billion ringgit Malaysia (384.62 million U.S. dollars) last Friday.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Monday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 5.07 points, or 0.15 percent, to close at 3,288.14.

A total of 4.48 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 32 billion Singapore dollars (1.06 billion U.S. dollars).

---- COLOMBO -- Share prices on the Colombo Stock Exchange closed lower on Monday with the key Colombo All Share Price Index decreasing by 55.67 points or 0.95 percent to close at 5,774.59 points.

The highly capitalized S&P SL20 also decreased by 24.97 points or 0.76 percent to close at 3,249.28 points.
