Edinburgh Lord Provost holds reception to celebrate Chinese New Year

Lord Provost Donald Wilson and Council of the City of Edinburgh on Saturday held a civic reception in the city chambers to celebrate Chinese New Year 2013 to promote understanding and knowledge of Chinese culture.

Delivering a speech at the reception, Wilson hailed the Chinese community's contribution to the development of the local society, adding that the event aims to celebrate the Chinese New Year 2013, the year of the Snake, together with the Chinese community in Edinburgh and enhance the exchange and cooperation between Edinburgh and the Chinese side.

Later, he told Xinhua that this is the first time for Lord Provost and Council of the City of Edinburgh to hold a civic reception to celebrate Chinese New Year as the Chinese community is an important element of the local society.

"As Lord provost, I would like to make extensive contacts with various communities to promote understanding and knowledge of different cultures and coexistence." he added.

For his part, Li Ruiyou, Chinese Consul General in Edinburgh, introduced the tradition and culture for Chinese to celebrate Chinese New Year, expressing the happiness to see more and more local people to join the Chinese community for the celebration.

Nearly 100 oversea Chinese and students, as well as local people attended the reception which started with a lion dancing. Endi
