A family of four were killed early Saturday morning in a traffic accident in the U.S. state of Texas, officials said.

A couple and their two children, aged six and eight, were driving on a rainy highway in Montgomery County early in the morning when a pickup truck driving in the opposite direction swerved into their lane and collided with their car, the Houston Chronicle quoted the Texas Department of Public Safety sources as reporting.

The driver of the truck was also taken by ambulance to an area hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to the report.

The family, from Cleveland, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics minutes after the collision.

The collision was described by officials as one of the worst in the area, given the human lives lost and the severe damage to the vehicles, including the truck's engine being thrown out of the frame.

An investigation was underway. Endi
