Argentine children book illustrator Isol was awarded the 2013 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award of Sweden on Tuesday.

Isol, born in Argentina 1972 with her original name Marisol Misenta, was an illustrator, cartoonist, graphic artist, writer, singer and composer.

"Taking children's clear view of the world as her starting point, she addresses their questions with forceful artistic expression and offers open answers. With liberating humour and levity, she also deals with the darker aspects of existence," said the jury of the award in a statement.

Isol made her debut in 1997 with Vida de perros, a story of a little boy who saw similarities between him and his dog.

In another story called El Globo she described an angry and loud-mouthed mother who was transformed into a balloon.

Isol's works have been published in some 20 countries, and were considered as "humorous with surprising twists, occasionally philosophical and always subtle," according to the statement.

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) is the world's largest prize for children's and young people's literature, with five million Swedish kronor (about 0.77 million U.S. dollars) awarded annually.

This year's award will be presented at a ceremony in the Stockholm Concert Hall on May 27. Endi
