A total of 31 people were detained in an operation on Tuesday against a criminal gang who were reportedly engaged in drug trafficking in southeastern Turkey, local media reported.

Turkish police raided numerous addresses in Diyarbakir province, detaining 31 suspects on charges of drug trafficking and establishing an armed gang for the purpose of generating illegal profits, according to the report.

Diyarbakir Governor Mustafa Toprak was quoted as saying that Tuesday's operation was carried out as part of an investigation into the gang, adding that four weapons and a blank-firing gun were seized.

Turkey has long been a key transit point along the drug smuggling route from Asia and the Middle East to Europe. Endi
