Russia completes drills tackling radiation emergencies

Russia finished Wednesday interdepartmental drills dealing with radiation accidents at the Zvezda plant in the Far Eastern town of Bolshoi Kamen, Primorsky Krai, local media reported Thursday.

Military forces of Eastern Military District, the Russian Pacific Fleet, the Russian Emergency Ministry, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and other agencies took part in the drills, the RIA Novosti news agency said.

Firefighters, police and rescuers began emergency relief operations under the scenarios that radiation leak took place in the course of submarine nuclear reactor core transhipment, and that a few polluted areas were threatening not only the personnel of the plant, but also the residents of Bolshoi Kamen.

They alerted and evacuated residents of the town, and conducted decontamination for the public and vehicles. Issuing points of personal protective equipment and radiation monitoring posts near the polluted areas and exits from the town were opened.
