Iran announces state of emergency in quake-hit region

Iran announced the state of emergency in the quake-hit region in southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province on Tuesday, Press TV reported.

An earthquake measuring 7.5-magnitude on the Richter scale hit Saravan city in Iran's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province at 15:14:17 (10:44: 17 GMT) on Tuesday, causing at least 40 dead so far, according to the report.

The epicenter was later determined to be at the depth of 95 km, 28.04 degrees north latitude and 62.03 degrees east longitude, according to Iran's Seismological Center.

The quake which has been unique in its kind in the past 40 years in Iran disrupted telecommunication totally in the region, semi-official Fars news agency reported.

People in most cities of Sistan and Baluchestan province as well as the cities near the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman region ran out of their houses to the streets in panic, according to Fars. Endi
