The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said in a statement on Saturday that it is in discussions with the Red Cross Society of China on whether international support is needed for the Sichuan earthquake.

Chinese Red Cross had sent emergency teams to quake-hit regions in response to a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in southwestern China's Sichuan Province, said the IFRC statement.

The first Red Cross volunteer team from the provincial capital Chengdu has arrived with relief supplies of food, water, medicines and rescue equipment and several more are on their way. The Red Cross' specialized Blue Sky rescue team has also arrived in the area, according to the IFRC.

Red Cross teams from Chongqing, Guizhou, Shandong, Guangzhou branches as well as China's Hong Kong and Macao Red Cross teams are preparing to deploy. Endi
