Power shortage hinders foreign investment in Tajikistan: president

Electricity shortage prevents foreign investors from doing business in Tajikistan, President Emomali Rahmon said Friday.

"One of the reasons why there are no investments is the lack of electricity," the president pointed out in his annual address to the parliament.

Hydropower is the primary source of electricity in Tajikistan, which is why it has a surplus in the summer and a severe shortage in the winter, when the water levels in the rivers are significantly reduced.

In winter, power supplies in all cities and villages, except Dushanbe, last only a few hours a day.

"The development of hydropower remains a priority," said the president.
