The Mauritanian army seized a huge amount of drugs this week near the country's border with Algeria, authorities have disclosed.

"The large quantity is close to 1 ton and it comprises cocaine and hashish," a security source told Xinhua on Sunday at Zouerate, 400 km north of the capital Nouakchott.

The traffickers on Friday fled an anti-drug operation, leaving behind the cargo which had come from northern Mali, the source said, describing the bust as the biggest drug seizure in Mauritania in the recent past.

The security services have vowed to proceed to burn the drugs near the mining town of Zouerate.

Mauritania has created a security corridor in the northern part of its territory to fight against terrorism and drug trafficking. Endi
