A UN investigator has expressed her strong suspicions that the Syrian rebels had used nerve agent sarin in Syria's two-year deadly conflict, local media reported Monday, quoting a foreign media outlet.
Speaking recently to Swiss TV, Carla del Ponte, who serves on the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, said there were "strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof" about the rebels use of sarin, adding that her "suspicions" were based on testimonies of victims.
Del Ponte stressed that her panel had not yet come upon evidence of alleged government troops' use of chemical weapons.
"Our investigators have been in neighboring countries interviewing victims, doctors and field hospitals," Del Ponte said.
Her comments came as Syria has been under Western pressures and accusations that the administration of President Bashar al-Assad had used chemical weapons in the fight against the rebels, a charge that was totally rejected by Damascus which accused Washington of attempting to repeat the Iraqi scenario.
