Singapore's Second Minister for Home Affairs S Iswaran launched the city state's first Road Safety Month on Monday.
The campaign targeted four groups of road users in particular, such as the transport industry, including heavy vehicle drivers; elderly pedestrians; students; and motorcyclists.
"Cyclists and pedestrians should always take extra care and precautions, given their greater vulnerability on the roads. So I would urge them to please keep an active lookout for vehicles and do not assume that the motorists can see you. It is better to make that extra effort to be safe," Iswaran said.
The campaign, organized by the Singapore Road Safety Council and the Traffic Police, will include a series of road safety events catering to each identified group of road users. They include a seminar for some 300 heavy vehicle drivers to share safe road practices, and a concert for the elderly to promote awareness.
Singapore, a city state with a population of 5.31 million, had 197 road fatalities in 2011, with about half being motorcyclists and pillion riders, according to statistics released by the traffic police. Endi
