Algeria has launched talks with U. S. giant General Electric to set up power plants, local radio reported Monday, citing Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines Youcef Yousfi.
One of the power plant to be built in Algeria would be the largest in Africa and the Arab region, the minister was quoted as saying.
Algeria's state-run electricity and gas utility group, Sonelgaz, has drawn up "the largest possible contract with the U.S. General Electric to generate 8400 MW," said Yousfi.
"Talks are underway to seal this contract," the minister said.
Last year, CEO of Sonelgaz, Noureddine Bouterfa, said that Algeria had earmarked a budget of 40 billion U.S. dollars to meet the nation's growing energy demand until 2019. Endi
