Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater advanced to the third round of the Billabong Rio Pro on Thursday by easily winning his opening heat at Barra da Tijuca beach.

The 41-year-old posted the third best score of the day with 16.3 points from his best two waves in choppy conditions. Only Gabriel Medina of Brazil (18.0) and Jordy Smith of South Africa (16.94) fared better.

"Conditions were a little difficult but I did my best and had a good day," Slater said after his heat. "Now I can get some rest and watch the others."

Reigning world champion Joel Parkinson also won his heat with a score of 13.34 while two-time tour winner Mick Fanning progressed with a tally of 13.2.

Slater, who missed last year's Rio Pro with a foot injury, currently leads the ASP World Tour rankings with 11,750 points ahead of Fanning (11,700), Taj Burrow (11,700), Adriano de Souza (10,500) and Parkinson (9,750).
