An American citizen was stabbed by an unknown assailant near the U.S. embassy in Cairo, state-run Ahram Online news website reported on Friday.

Chris Stone, an associate professor of Arabic and head of the Arabic Program at City University in New York, was recently appointed by the American University in Cairo as head of the U.S.- based Center for Arabic Study Abroad.

The motive is yet to be investigated, but the Ahram Online said that the man "appears to have been targeted for being American."

The suspect has been arrested and referred to the general prosecution for investigation.

Attacks on Americans are rare in Egypt, although there have been recurrent protests close to the U.S. embassy, located near iconic Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo. Endi
