The UN Security Council on Monday expressed strong condemnation after a car bombing killed at least three people in the Libyan city of Benghazi.

In a statement, the powerful UN body underlined the need to bring the perpetrators to justice, and urged all states to "cooperate actively with the Libyan authorities in this regard."

It also expressed deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims of these "heinous acts," as well as to the government and people of Libya.

Stressing that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, the council reiterated its determination to combat terrorism.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council urged the international community to "support Libya's successful transition to a secure, peaceful and prosperous democracy."

A medical source told Xinhua that besides the three deaths, six others were wounded in the explosion, which occurred in the car park at a Benghazi hospital.
