Cuba opened here the 63th Ernest Hemingway Marlin Fishing International Tournament from Monday till Saturday.

Organizers said a dozen boats from the United States, Canada, France, Mexico, Colombia, South Africa and Italy participated in the event.

"We are awaiting the arrival of other six vessels from the United States, who announced their participation to start fishing on Tuesday," said Nayiala Linares, publicist from the Marina and Resort "Ernest Hemingway" in Havana, where the competition is hosted.

The fishing event, aiming to protect the environment, will be held in the form of "Tag and Release", which means that the preys will be photographed, and released back into the sea, after the fishermen communicate by radio on its capture.

To make the championship more attractive, the organizing committee added new categories, granting prizes to the crews catching the biggest wahoo and tuna, besides of the "offshore challenge", which is awarded to the first team to seize specimens of several species on the same day.

The first edition of the marling fishing tournament was held on May 26, 1950, named after American writer Ernest Hemingway, Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1954 and author of the novel "Old Man and Sea".

Hemingway donated the cup for the first three tournaments, and was also lucky enough to win the 1953-1955 editions.

The competition is considered one of the oldest of its kind in the world, only preceded by the Tuna World Cup in Nova Scotia, Canada, and the Tarpon Tournament in Mexico according to the tournament official website www.internationalhemingwaytournament.com. Endit
