The Arab Ministerial Committee on Syria decided on Thursday to assign Arab League (AL) chief and Qatari Prime Minister to convey their vision on the intended international conference on Syria to the permanent member states of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Following an emergency meeting at the AL headquarters in Cairo, the ministerial committee assigned its chairman Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim and AL Secretary-General to convey their recommendations for the success of the Geneva II conference on Syria to the five UN Security Council permanent member states and the joint AL-UN special envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.
The concluding statements did not reveal the Arab recommendations nor did it show the Arab vision that would be presented to the Geneva II conference.
It stated that the ministerial committee held an emergency meeting on Thursday where the Arab foreign ministers discussed the latest "dangerous" developments in Syria and crystalized an Arab position towards the efforts exerted to find a political solution for the crisis in the light of the recent U.S.-Russian understanding.
A diplomatic source who attended the meeting revealed to Xinhua that the Arab ministerial committee on Syria communicated with Turkey for consultation on the Syrian conflict.
There is a general framework agreed upon at committee on Thursday, which is "the presence of peacekeeping forces in Syria to guarantee the country's stability during the transitional period," the source said.
"The intended peacekeeping forces are intended to be sent to the fighting areas in Syria and their tasks will be specified by the UNSC to maintain peace and security and ensure safety of civilians," he told Xinhua.
The Arab Ministerial Committee on Syria consists of the foreign ministers of Qatar, Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, Oman, Iraq, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, besides the AL chief.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has recently paid a visit to Moscow and agreed with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to hold an international peace conference on Syria.
The intended conference is meant to revive a previous one, held in late June 2012 in Geneva and sponsored by the two powers, which called for immediate ceasefire between Syrian fighting parties and launching inter-Syrian dialogue for a transitional government.
On Wednesday, the Friends of Syria group held a meeting in Jordan, calling for a transitional government as a way to end the violence in Syria through the upcoming international peace conference in Geneva expected in June.
The group agreed that Bashar al-Assad and his aides who were involved in bloodshed in Syria could not play any role in the country's future. Endi
