BRATISLAVA, SLOVAK, June 3 (Xinhua) - The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU) has issued a third-degree flood warning, the highest degree, for the entire Slovak stretch of the Danube River, SHMU spokesman Ivan Garcar said on Monday.
The water level on the river at the confluence with the Morava River near Bratislava's Devin area has reached 720 cm and is still rising.
"The amount of rain forecast in the Danube River basin in Germany and Austria has actually fallen, with the last 24 hours seeing 20-60 mm of precipitation," said the institute's hydrologist Peter Smrtnik. He said that total rainfall recorded over the past four days in the Austrian and German basin of the river reached 60-170 mm.
The hydrologist observed that the water level may rise even further in the next few days. As a response to the alarming water levels on all stretches of the Danube River caused by persistent rainfall in Austria and Germany, Slovakia's State Shipping Administration (SPS) decided that no vessels will be allowed to traverse the Danube River in Slovakia until early Monday morning.
