Visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Mexican counterpart, Enrique Pena Nieto, pledged Tuesday to enhance political dialogue on bilateral, regional and global issues so as to consolidate the China-Mexico comprehensive strategic partnership.

In a joint statement released after talks between Xi and Pena Nieto, they agreed to maintain frequent contacts between leaders of the two countries and to enhance exchange of visits by ministers in a bid to boost cooperation in various areas.

The Mexican side announced that its agriculture secretary will pay a working visit to China and attend the China-Latin America and the Caribbean agriculture ministers' forum in June. The tourism secretary will visit China in July.

The two leaders agreed to further consolidate the role of the China-Mexico binational commission so as to promote, coordinate and trace the development of their comprehensive strategic partnership.

The two sides will send high-level delegations to the sixth session of the commission scheduled for 2014 in Mexico. The subcommittees and working panels of the commission should conduct active dialogues and keep regular contacts, said the statement.

The two countries also voiced willingness to strengthen the China-Mexico strategic dialogue mechanism, which serves as a framework for the two sides to deepen mutual trust and conduct bilateral dialogues on strategic issues.

Committed to multilateralism, China and Mexico stand ready to enhance dialogue and consultations within such multilateral frameworks as the United Nations, the Group of 20 and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, coordinate their positions and launch joint initiatives so as to reach consensus on major global issues, the two leaders stressed.

The two sides also reached agreement to promote overall cooperation between China and Latin America and the Caribbean and make concerted efforts to establish a China-Latin America cooperation forum.

During talks earlier in the day, Xi and Pena Nieto agreed to lift their countries' relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Xi arrived in Mexico City Tuesday for a three-day state visit.

Mexico is the last leg of Xi's ongoing three-nation Latin America tour, which has already taken him to Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica.

From Mexico, Xi will fly to California for a summit meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama. Endi
