Indian police said Thursday that they have arrested three men for allegedly gangraping an American tourist in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh's resort town of Manali Tuesday.

"All the three accused, including a truck driver, have been arrested for allegedly gangraping the 30-year-old U.S. woman tourist after she had hitched a ride in the vehicle while coming back after meeting a friend on the outskirts of Manali. All are from the neighboring country of Nepal," a senior police official said.

The victim told the police that the truck driver and his two accomplices took the truck to a secluded place and then took turns to rape her before dumping her on the roadside.

The latest gangrape of a foreign tourist in India came barely three months after a Swiss woman was allegedly gangraped by a group of men while she was on a cycling tour of the central state of Madhya Pradesh along with her husband.

In December last year, the horrific and fatal gangrape of a 23- year-old Indian medical student by six men on a moving bus in the Indian capital had sparked massive outrage, forcing the government to bring in stricter laws for sexual assaults on women. Endi
