Ukraine would intensify efforts to develop energy efficient lighting technologies that could help reduce power use, Deputy Prime Minister Alexandr Vilkul said Thursday.

"The development of new energy-saving technologies for the real sector of the economy is the strategic mission of our science," Vilkul told a conference on energy issues at the Kiev-based Institute of Physics.

Ukrainian scientists had developed innovative LED structures and thermal stabilization systems for high power LEDs, Vilkul said, adding the technologies could help reduce power consumption 10-fold.

Ukraine already produced high-quality and affordable LED equipment, in particular LED clusters with chip-on-board technology, Vilkul said.

Ukraine's LED lighting equipment output had potential to rise by 25 percent annually on average within the next five years, he said.

According to local experts' estimates, last year Ukraine's LED lighting equipment output rose to around 18.75 million U.S. dollars. Endi
