A former police official who used to head an anti-drug unit has pleaded guilty on Friday to a drug trafficking charge in the U.S. state of Texas, local media reported.

Fabian Rodriguez, a former County sheriff's deputy in South Texas, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine, TV ABC13 reported.

The U.S. attorney's office said 29-year-old Rodriguez was a member of the drug ring "Panama Unit," which prosecutors say stole drugs from traffickers only to resell them to another dealer.

Meanwhile, six former police officers, including the sheriff's son, from the sheriff's office and local police department also pleaded guilty to drug charges.

Rodriguez faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced on Sept. 10. The anti-drug unit, created to target street-level drug crimes, was disbanded last December after the scandal was exposed. Endi
