Romania registers EU's biggest drop in retail trade in May

The retail trade volume fell by 3.0 percent in Romania in May this year on the previous month, becoming the biggest drop among the countries of the European Union (EU), the data of the European Statistics Office (Eurostat) showed on Wednesday.

Moreover, among the 27 EU member states, the retail trade fell only in three countries: Romania, Hungary (minus 0.4 percent) and Bulgaria (minus 0.3 percent), the official Agerpres news agency cited Eurostat as reporting.

On a year-on-year base, Romania had one of the most accentuated decreases (minus 4.4 percent) in the EU, overtaken only by Spain, where the retail trade declined by 6.3 percent, at the annual rate.

According to figures presented by Romania's National Institute of Statistics, the turnover of retail trade (except of motor vehicles and motorcycles trade) fell in May by 2.7 percent on the previous month, while the adjusted data depending on the number of working days and seasonality showed a decrease of 3 percent.
