Morocco's second largest party decided late Monday to withdraw from the government led by the moderate Islamist Party of Justice and Development (PJD), the party's spokesman said.

Adil Benhamza said the ministers from the Istiqlal ( Independence) Party will tender their resignations to Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane, also the PJD secretary general, on Tuesday.

He added Istiqlal Party Secretary General Hamid Chabat has informed the Moroccan King of the party's decision, which was made after "desperate" efforts to avoid such a move.

The incumbent government was formed after the November-2011 elections, during which the PJD won 107 seats and the former ruling Istiqlal Party won 60 out of a total of 395 seats.

Istiqlal has been increasingly critical of Benkirane's government in the media since January, mainly of the latter's refusal to a cabinet reshuffle. Endi
