Eight soldiers were wounded in roadside bomb ambush on Thursday morning in the restive southern province of Yala.

Soldiers from the teacher protection unit from the 12th special unit in Yala's Raman district were on patrol unit early Thursday when their vehicle was caught in a roadside bomb ambush in Balo sub-district.

The explosion wrecked the truck and eight men were wounded and sent to Raman Hospital.

The authorities cordoned off the area to inspect the scene and gather evidence.

More than 5,000 people have been killed and more than 9,000 hurt in over 11,000 incidents, about 3.5 incidents a day, in Thailand's Muslim, ethnic-Malay dominated three southern border provinces -- Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and four districts of Songkhla -- since violence erupted in January 2004, according to Deep South Watch, which monitors the regional violence.
