The European Commission's vice president Viviane Reding on Monday urged Bulgaria to continue its reform, calling for its citizens to play a key role in the process.

"The Commission wants to lend a helping hand to Bulgaria to help fight corruption and organized crime and to assist in implementing judicial reforms," said the commissioner, who is responsible for justice, fundamental rights and citizenship.

The message was delivered prior to the commissioner's dialogue on Europe's future with over 250 citizens in Sofia, capital of Bulgaria.

As part of a series of citizens' dialogues with EU commissioners, as well as national politicians and members of the European Parliament, it is to be lively streamed and broadcast while citizens across Europe can participate online.

The European Commission kicked off the European Year of Citizens earlier this year in the hope of highlighting citizens' rights through engaging EU citizens in the debates about Europe's future, in particular considering the fact that Europe has been hard hit by economic crises for recent years and that the EU is to hold its general elections in 2014.
