At least one person was killed and thousands of others were forced to evacuate after a dam collapsed in eastern Indonesia's Maluku Province Thursday following days of torrential rain, local media reported.

The damp bursted Thursday morning in central Maluku, leaving one person missing and seriously injuring eight others, news portal detik.com reported.

The incident which damaged 470 houses and dozens of public facilities has forced more than 5,000 villiagers in the area to evacuate.

"The water level surrounding the dam area receded now," Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency's (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told detik.com, Sutopo said the agency has deployed two Hercules planes to deliver food, clothes and other relief aid to the flood hit area.

Indonesia has been frequently hit by landslide and flood during rainy season. In 2009, a dam bursted on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital Jakarta, and left 98 people dead and another 102 missing. Endi
