Greek authorities were on alert on Tuesday as the country has been hit by the first heat wave this summer with temperatures scaling up to 40 degrees Celsius in some areas, including Athens.

As Greeks and foreign visitors flock to the seaside to cool themselves, the City of Athens and other municipalities in major urban centers have opened public air-conditioned spaces to citizens.

The Athens Doctors' Association has advised the public to be cautious, in particular groups who are at higher risk of heat stroke and other health problems. Experts suggest to people to stay at home if possible, avoid exposure to the sun and physical exercise and drink fluids.

According to the Greek National Meteorological Service temperatures will start dropping as of Wednesday. Endi
