Singapore retail sales in June declined 4.0 percent on year, reversing the adjusted 3.1 percent annual rise in May, the city-state's Department of Statistics said on Thursday.

The decline was mainly due to the sharp decline in sales of motor vehicles, which reported a 26.9 percent decline in sales compared to a year earlier. The retail sales still grew by 2.6 percent on year after excluding motor vehicles.

Retail sales of telecommunications apparatus and computers also decreased by 8.2 percent from the previous year, while retailers of the sector of furniture and household equipment saw sales down 3.5 percent on year.

On the other hand, retailers of food and beverages, supermarkets, medical goods and toiletries and department stores recorded increases in sales of between 6.2 percent and 7.8 percent in June.

On a month-on-month basis, retail sales decreased 6.9 percent in June. Excluding motor vehicles, it went up by 1.0 percent on month. Endi
