African table tennis champion in Nigeria for Lagos classics

African table tennis champion, Egypt's Omar Assar has arrived alongside some of the foreign players expected to feature in the first Lagos International Table Tennis Classics, which serves off on Monday Aug. 26 at Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium.

The 2011 All Africa Games winner, who is the highest ranked player in the tournament arrived Lagos alongside, Italy's Mihai Bobocica as well as Lithuania's Matas Skucas.

Players from Congo Brazzaville, Congo DRC, Cameroun, Togo, Benin, and Ghana are expected to arrive today for the draws, scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Also, 42 Nigerian players will compete with their foreign counterparts in the main draw of the men's singles with former players like Fatai Adeyemo and Saubana Ayemojuba making it to the main draw as well.

Winners in the men's and women's singles will get 5,000 U.S dollars and 4,000 dollars respectively, while players that reach the round of 16 of the singles events will get cash rewards.

Nigeria's duo of Mojeed Olayiwola and Hammed Adeyinka believe they are ready to share from the prize money.

Southpaw Olayiwola, who won three gold medals at the 2012 National Sports Festival, said he is battle ready for the challenge.

The tournament has been approved by International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and Africa Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) as it is the highest prize money tournament in Africa, being organized by the Main Organizing Committee of Lagos International Sports Classics in collaboration with the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF).

With players competing in the senior and junior categories made up of 10 events, while the tournament will be staged according to ITTF and ATTF rules. Endi
