A government delegation from Nigeria's northwestern state of Kano led by Governor Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso is currently on an official tour of China, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

The delegation, which left Nigeria for China last Friday, is in the East Asian country as part of the moves to deepen the existing bilateral trade relations between the peoples of the state and country, Baba Dantiye, spokesperson of the governor said.

"The delegation would be using the visit to showcase the investment and business opportunities available in Kano, a state of about 10.3 million people," he said, adding the visit would last for one week.

On the entourage of the governor is Umar Farouk Rabiu, president of the Kano Chamber of Commerce, Mines, Industry, and Agriculture (KACCIMA), Dantiye noted.

The state governor is appealing to Chinese investors to set up businesses and take advantage of the favorable investment environment existing in the most populous northern state in Nigeria, he further stated.

"One particular sector which the governor would be seeking Chinese investment is in the development of the Independent Power Plant, to be built on Tiga/Challawa Dam," the governor's aide added.

The visit is the first official tour by Governor Kwankwaso to China since assuming office on May 29, 2011.

Kano State, which is the commercial hub of Nigeria's northern region, has been facing various economic woes recently, due to terrorist attacks in the northern and central parts of the West African country, by the Boko Haram sect.

At least 50 persons were killed in Sabon-Gari downtown district of the state late July, when members of the sect planted improvised explosive devices at relaxation spots in the area. Endi
