South African Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will lead a delegation to China's capital Beijing to attend the 5th South Africa-China Bi-National Commission, the government said on Wednesday.

The commission, scheduled from Oct. 28 to 29, was formed through establishment of committees to strengthen the cooperation of the two countries in the areas of foreign affairs, economy and trade, science and technology, education, energy and minerals.

Montlanthe and his Chinese counterpart Li Yuanchao will co- chair the commission.

"Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1998, the relationship between South Africa and China has been growing strong," Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRC) said in a statement.

China is South Africa's largest trading partner, with the current trade volume standing at 21 billion U. S. dollars.

The commission is expected to review progress made in implementing cooperation agreements made by the two countries.

"Both governments are committed to work together to raise the volumes of trade and investment between the two countries," DIRC spokesman Clayson Monyela said.

Both South Africa and China are members of the BRICS, an acronym for the powerful grouping of the world's leading emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

"South Africa and China are working together to address development challenges and strengthen China-Africa relations," Monyela said.

Motlanthe will be accompanied by ministers and deputy ministers of the country's key ministries. Endi
