India's legendary singer Manna Dey died at a hospital in the southern city of Bengaluru Thursday, at the age of 94.

Dey died at 3.50 a.m. (local time) at the Bengaluru hospital where he has been undergoing treatment for prolonged respiratory illness, according to one of the doctors treating him.

"We are saddened by his loss, but he died peacefully. His last rites will be performed later in the day," his son-in-law J. Dev said.

The singer is survived by his two daughters, one of whom lives in the United States. His wife died last year.

Born in 1919, Dey made his debut as a playback singer in the Bollywood film Tamanna in 1942, and went on to record more than 4, 000 songs from 1942 to 2013. He sang in various Indian languages.

He received the Padma Shri Award in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007 -- all very respected awards in this country. Endi
