China supports the efforts to further deepen cooperation between the UN Security Council and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in their common effort to promote peace and development, a Chinese envoy to the UN said Monday.

Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, made the remarks at a Security Council meeting on cooperation between UN and regional and sub-regional organization.

The 15-nation council pledged to strengthen cooperation with the OIC in the maintenance of international peace and security in a presidential statement adopted earlier at the meeting.

"At present, global and regional threats and challenges are on the rise and national security interests are intertwined," Liu said, noting strengthening UN's cooperation with regional and sub- regional organizations is conducive to promoting multilateralism, solidifying and strengthening international collective security mechanism and our comment effort in maintaining international peace and security.

China appreciates the important role played by the OIC in promoting unity and cooperation in the Islamic world and dialogues among different civilizations, said Liu.

"China supports the efforts to further deepen cooperation between the UN, its Security Council and the OIC in their common effort to promote international peace and common development," he said, adding that "the conduct of cooperation between the UN and the OIC should be guided by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the basic norms governing international relations."

The OIC has unique advantages in religion, history and culture in handling issues in the Islamic world, Liu noted. Over the past years, the OIC has played an importance role, recognized by the international community, in assisting settlement of regional conflicts and strengthening post-conflict reconstruction, he said.

"The cooperation between the UN, its Security Council and the OIC should be built on coordination and relative advantages so as to complement each other's efforts and form synergy," he added.

The cooperation can take a variety of forms while focusing on results, Liu said, adding that the UN Secretariats and the OIC have reached an importance consensus on strengthening cooperation on conflict prevention and mediation, humanitarian assistance and cross-culture dialogues.

China attaches top priority to the unique role of the OIC and supports its continuing positive efforts to maintaining regional peace and security and promote common development, Liu said. " China stands ready to join the international community in further elevating the cooperation between the UN and its Security Council and the OIC in our joint effort to build a harmonious world of enduring peace and common prosperity," he concluded.
