Police on Thursday took a 15-year-old high school student into custody over threats made on Twitter against other students in the U.S. state of Texas, local media reported.

In one message posted on the social media website, the student, whose name was not released by the police, claimed he would take a gun to school and kill others out of retaliation, local media KHOU reported.

The student was thought to have alleged he has been "bullied for five years" at his school in Deer Park, a small city 30 km away from Houston.

A thorough investigation revealed the student did not have the means to carry out any such attack, according to the report. Police said the 15-year-old did not have a plan or weapons, and that he acted alone.

The teenager, who was arrested at home Thursday morning, admitted to detectives he created a false account and used other people's photos. Investigators tracked him down by working with Twitter.

As the threatening tweet alarmed students and parents, attendance at the suspect's school was reportedly down by more than 20 percent. The school published a statement later on Thursday reassuring families of the campus' safety.

It was not clear if the student would be charged. He remained in custody at a juvenile detention facility. Endi
