China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday to boost cooperation in telecommunications and information technology.

It was signed at the close of the 13th ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministers Meeting and related meetings in Singapore by China's Industry and Information Technology Minister Miao Wei and Singapore's Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim who represents the ASEAN.

Under the MoU, the two parties will work together on areas such as promoting industry, human resource and infrastructure development, as well as cooperation in new technologies and information exchange.

China is one of the first dialogue partners to work with ASEAN in the information technology and telecommunications industry.

Miao also said at the press conference that China will officially issue 4G licenses by the end of the year.

The technologies to be used will be decided by the telecommunications carriers based on the respective resources they have, he added. Endi
