Kenya on Tuesday called on African governments to collaborate in the fight against cyber crime in the continent.
Information Communication Technology (ICT) cabinet secretary Fred Matiangi expressed Kenya's commitment to enacting necessary legislation on cyber crime while working with partners regionally and internationally to mitigate the vice.
"With an internet penetration of approximately 16 million, ICT applications such as e government services have become enablers for the country's development. Unfortunately, the same gains are under threat from cyber criminals, whose objective is to illegally compromise on-line systems," said Matiangi during a conference in Nairobi organized by COMESA member states.
The four-day meeting attended by 17 members of COMESA, government bodies, information security experts and ICT industry called for concerted efforts in the fight against cyber crime, which is one of the greatest security challenges in the 21st century.
Kenya formed a committee in June 2012 to spearhead efforts against cyber offenses under the Communication Act of Kenya.
The conference is expected to create awareness on information security and public key infrastructure issues and contribute to the formulation and adoption of harmonized cyber security frameworks and other legal interventions. Endi
