Insurer Achmea will cut a total of 4,000 jobs as part of reorganization in the next three years, the Dutch company announced Wednesday.

The insurance company made the adjustment after it decided to expand investment in online service as "the society is changing ever more rapidly, which puts current working methods under pressure," said Achmea company.

"Our 8 million customers are doing more and more online and also want to arrange their insurance in that way,"said Willem van Duin, chairman of Achmea's Executive Board, in a statement.

"In doing so we can be sure of preserving what we are in the future: a cooperative insurer with the strongest of brands that communicate with their customers in a modern way."

Achmea has 19,000 employees worldwide, with most of them in the Netherlands. In 2009, the Dutch insurer had already dropped 2,500 jobs.

Achmea posted a net result of 123 million euros (167 million U.S. dollars) in the first half of 2013, down 41 percent compared to a 210 million euros net result in the first half of 20
