At the moment, there is no need to involve international mediators to settle the political situation in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara said on Thursday.

"I consider mediation as an extreme measure, which would have shown the inability of the government and the opposition to hold constructive negotiations," Kozhara was quoted by Interfax-Ukraine news agency as saying.

To end the three-week protests and ensure health political environment in the country, Ukrainian authorities and opposition leaders should start an active dialogue on topical issues, Kozhara said.

Earlier in the day, the European Parliament in its resolution called for an immediate launch of a new European Union (EU) mediation mission to secure a peaceful outcome to the current crisis in Ukraine.

Protests in Ukraine started on Nov. 21 with peaceful demonstrations demanding the country's European integration, but soon snowballed into a violent nationwide movement against authorities.

Ukraine's pullout of signing a partnership agreement that would deepen its ties with the EU at the Eastern Partnership Summit in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius last month triggered the protests. Endi
